The tallest building in Hungary

Instagram Story Hungary Esztergom Basilica

– photo by WOW Hungary, the official tourism account of Hungary

In a country where buildings cannot go higher than 96 meters due to government regulation, the 100 meter tall Roman Catholic basilica of Esztergom takes the crown of Hungary’s tallest building. Built between 1822 and 1856, it is also the largest church in Hungary.

The basilica is located in Hungary’s second-largest city Esztergom in the Várhegy (castle hill) area and overlooks the Danube river.

After entering through the gate of the basilica, located on the left is Bakócz Chapel – one of the most notable highlights of the basilica. The chapel is made of red-and-white marble and you will see beautiful Tuscan Renaissance motifs on its walls. If you head towards the door on the right and go down about 50 steps, you will enter the crypt, which houses the tombs of several priests and the builders of the basilica.

The treasury of the basilica is located in the northwest and from here, if you choose to climb up about 350 steps to the dome of the basilica, you will be rewarded with an excellent view of Esztergom city.

The title of the tallest building in Hungary is likely to be taken away by the 143 meter tall MOL Campus, due for completion in 2021.
