Why Changi Airport is retaining its top spot for 7 more years

Instagram Story Singapore Changi Airport

Have you ever been to Singapore or used it as a transit point for a connecting flight? Then you know that we are not exaggerating when we say – Changi is awesome!

Singapore Changi Airport, commonly known as Changi Airport, is one of the largest transportation hubs in Asia and is currently rated the World’s Best Airport. With a reputation to live up to, Singapore unveiled the Jewel complex at Changi in April 2019. Ryan Cheng, a Singaporean photographer, was invited for an exclusive first look tour at Jewel before it officially opened to the world. Read on to find out what he has to say.

Jewel Changi Airport re-imagines the center of an airport as a major public realm attraction. Jewel offers a range of facilities for landside airport operations, indoor gardens and leisure attractions, retail offerings and hotel facilities, all under one roof. A distinctive dome-shaped facade made of glass and steel adds to Changi Airport’s appeal as one of the world’s leading air hubs. At the heart of the space is the magnificent Rain Vortex, an indoor waterfall said to be the tallest in the world, pouring down from 40 metres high. Surrounding this waterfall is the Forest Valley, a lush indoor garden spanning four storeys with two walking trails, flanked by a huge variety of plants from all over the world.”

More details about Jewel Changi Airport:

Jewel Changi Airport (also known as Jewel or Jewel Changi) is a nature-themed entertainment and retail complex on the landside of Changi Airport, Singapore, linked to three of its passenger terminals. Its centrepiece is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex, which is surrounded by a terraced forest setting.

Jewel includes gardens, attractions, a hotel, aviation facilities and more than 300 retail and dining facilities. It covers a total gross floor area of 135,700 square meters, spanning 10 storeys – five above-ground and five basement levels. Its attractions include the Shiseido Forest Valley, an indoor garden spanning four storeys, and the Canopy Park at the topmost level, featuring gardens and leisure facilities.

Opened to the public on 17 April 2019, the integrated complex of Jewel Changi Airport was first conceptualized in 2013, and construction began in December 2014, on a 3.5 hectare area that was previously an open-air carpark.
