The colourful lavender fields of Provence

The French region of Provence is synonymous with enchanted lavender fields. Sure, there are many other places in the world where you can see lavenders, but none can match the sheer scale of Provence. Home to small villages and traditional ways of life, the main lavender fields of Provence are in the Luberon district around Gordes, east of Avignon. To immerse yourself in the delicate fragrance of the purple hued lavender fields, visit during the main flowering season, between the months of June and August. Lavenders grow naturally in the region and to know more about the history of lavender fields, you can visit the Lavender Museum in Avignon.

Lavender is used in making various products like oil, soaps and perfumes. Tourism is an integral part of lavender farming and almost all lavender farms and distilleries are open to the public. You can find them just by driving down the roads and looking out for signs.

Instagram Story France Lavender Field Ute

– oil painting of Provence by Ute Herrmann, an artist from Germany.

“Provence is a particularly attractive area for artists. I think that’s because of the light and the colors of the landscape. The lavender blossom in particular is a dream. The beautiful landscapes always give cause for joy and are a refreshment for the soul. I am often in the Luberon and work there on new motifs. I hope to get a chance to visit this beautiful area again this year.”

Instagram Story France Lavender Field Inna

– watercolor painting of Provence by Inna Yashchuk, and artist from Ukraine.

“I love France and lavender fields so much that I decided to paint it.”
