Stay overnight as a prisoner in Karosta Prison

– photos by Karosta Prison

Have you ever wondered what prison life is like? If your answer is yes, then you should visit Karosta military prison in Liepāja, Latvia.

Relax, this is not a real prison, but one of the most surprising and unusual hotels in the world. Karosta Prison is a former military prison and Europe’s only prison that welcomes tourists. It was built in the early 20th-century and served as a military prison for the Soviets, Nazis and Latvians until 1997. Nobody has ever escaped from this prison.

At Karosta Prison, you can go on a guided tour to see the prison and discover its history or opt for a full prison experience – where you will not only be given a prison uniform, but also treated like a prisoner. To make the experience more realistic, you may face interrogation upon entering the prison, and spend the night locked in a cold cell.

Before enrolling for the full prison experience, you will need to sign an agreement that says you will obey the prison’s rules, otherwise you may have to deal with verbal insults or even physical punishments like cleaning and exercising.

The prison offers other exciting activities like Escape Room, Escape from the USSR, Behind Bars and Freedom Trail.

Escape room – an adventure game in which players are locked in a room and have to find clues, unlock secret messages and solve a series of puzzles and escape from the room within 60 minutes. To successfully escape from the room you will have to use logic, imagination, intuition and teamwork.

Escape from the USSR Spy Game – learn about the era of soviet occupation. Work as a team to cross a number of obstacles, find a friend who is not able to get to safety alone and get them and your team to safety at the submarine. In the Soviet border zone it is vital to be silent and move unnoticed and in secrecy. If one of the team members is noticed by a border guard, an alarm will sound and the operation will be considered a failure and incomplete.

Behind Bars – each participant gets an opportunity to live the part of a prisoner and learn about the most interesting and shocking facts from the history of the prison.

Freedom Trail – a 10km long walk, where you can discover the history of Liepaja Fortress, learn about Latvia’s fight for freedom in 1919 and enjoy the diversity of Karosta’s nature.
