Remote and spectacular Kol-Suu

The alpine lake of Köl-Suu in southeastern Naryn Province, is remote even by Kyrgyzstan standards. It is located at an elevation of 3500m in the Tian Shan mountains, close to the Chinese border.

The spectacular glacial lake stretches over 10km and is set in a rocky canyon whose sheer sides drop almost straight down into the lake. It’s difficult to get to, but is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Kyrgyzstan. It’s hard to grasp the true scale of the surrounding mountains until you get on a boat and head for the center of the lake, where everything seems dwarfed by rock walls on all sides.
