San Marino is Europe’s third smallest country and one of the world’s oldest republics. The country is only 61 sq km in size and is completely surrounded by Italy! This mountainous micronation is known for historic architecture and verdant natural surroundings.
The country’s capital city is also called San Marino (Città di San Marino) and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site that is characterized by medieval towers, a walled old town and cobblestone streets. At every turn, you will be presented with charming architectural wonders, among which the three fortresses or towers overlooking the city are the highlights. The 10th-century Rocca Guaita (First Tower) sits majestically on Mount Titano and is the most iconic of the three. The Second Tower, Castello Cesta from the 11th-century, now houses the Museum of Archaic Arms and its interesting collection of ancient weaponry. Montale, the third and smallest tower, was mainly used for surveillance and as a prison. Visiting these towers and admiring the stunning panoramic views from the peaks is the best experience the country offers its visitors. Other notable highlights of the city include the town hall and official seat of the government, Palazzo Pubblico and Museo di Stato, which showcases the art, culture and history of the country.
The tiny nation of San Marino is an aesthetic delight for its visitors, packed with lovely historical landmarks and beautiful natural landscapes. If you are planning a visit to Italy, then it is highly recommended that you include a stop here too!
