Honduras

Honduras, located in Central America, is a country with rich Maya history and ruins, white-sand beaches, ancient villages and jungle-covered mountains. Honduras is also a great diving and snorkelling destination as it is a part of the Mesoamerican barrier reef.

Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras and known for its Spanish era architecture. The mountain-ringed city is notable for the 18th-century baroque Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, the Museum of National Identity, Parque Naciones Unidas El Picacho featuring the Cristo del Picacho, a 65 m tall statue of Christ and a few other charming cathedrals.

The UNESCO listed Copan, in western Honduras, near the Guatemalan border is the main tourist attraction in the country due to its impressive Maya ruins. This archaeological site was once a thriving Maya city and houses a trove of ancient relics from its glorious days. The remarkable pyramids, massive palace buildings, temples, stone carvings and tunnels will take you on a memorable journey through the ancient Maya civilizations. Lake Yojoa, surrounded by mountains, in the western-cental region is the largest lake in the country and home to rich birdlife. The area also offers good hiking opportunities.

Trujillo on the Caribbean coast in northern Honduras presents a combination of historical elements and natural beauty. While in Trujillo, don’t miss the 17th-century Spanish Fortaleza Santa Bárbara de Trujillo and the San Juan Bautista Cathedral. The city’s excellent beaches and surrounding picturesque mountains also boost its natural beauty.The port city of La Ceiba is one of the best party places in the country and even has an area dedicated to it – zona viva, meaning nightlife district. From here, you can visit the Pico Bonito National Park with rich wildlife and waterfalls and the Parque Swinford, set in a former banana plantation. From here, you can explore the Bay islands of Honduras – Roatan and Utila. The islands offer pristine white-sand beaches and excellent diving and snorkelling. Utila is also a popular backpacker’s paradise with a lively nightlife and Roatan is a bustling cruise port.
