The Dominican Republic is one of the most mountainous countries in the Caribbean with verdant rainforests and great beaches. This is also where you will find both the highest and the lowest points in the Caribbean – Pico Duarte and Lago Enriquillo. With its aesthetic colonial architecture, luxurious resorts, incredible golf courses and phenomenal parties, you are bound to have the time of your life!

The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo is the oldest European city in the Americas and is steeped in history. Located in the heart of the city, the cobblestoned Zona Colonial (also known as Ciudad Colonial) is its historic neighborhood where you will come across the oldest cathedral in the western hemisphere – Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor. Alcázar de Colón – a UNESCO world heritage site and museum, Palacio Consistorial – a 16th-century town hall, Pantheon of the Fatherland – an 18th-century Jesuit church, Fortaleza Ozama and Museum of the Royal Houses are some important places to visit in Zona Colonial. Parque Mirador del Sur is famous for its verdant interior and caves; it is a great place for walking, cycling or relaxation. Faro a Colon is a lighthouse dedicated to Christopher Columbus and is believed to have the remains of the great Italian explorer.

Endless white sand beaches fringed with palm trees are what draws tourists to Dominican Republic. Bavaro and Punta Cana have the most pristine beaches on the island and are dotted with numerous resorts and hotels. Playa Dominicus is another stretch of white sand that would bring a smile to the faces of beach lovers. Las Galeras and Las Terrenas on the Samaná Peninsula are equally famous for their sandy beaches and aquamarine waters.

At 3,098 meter, Pico Duarte is the highest peak in the Caribbean and there are several hiking routes to the top. Located a few kilometres from Pico Duarte, nestled in the foothills of the Cordillera Central is Jarabacoa. It is a great place to experience rural life and indulge in various adventurous activities like rafting, hiking, biking and canyoning. Located in Punta Cana, Montana Redonda offers some great mountaintop views and is often flocked by Instagrammers looking for magical snapshots.

Sipping cocktails on the deck chair of a luxury resort, going on an adventure in Jarabacoa, whale-watching in the Samana Peninsula or investigating the ruins of crumbling forts, Dominican Republic has something to offer everyone.
