Cabo Verde (also known as Cape Verde) is a country in West Africa with stunning beaches, seaside villages, and soaring mountains with a sprinkle of European flavour. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, this beautiful country is an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands.
The largest island Santiago is home to the country’s capital – Praia. The capital itself is relatively low key, with some beaches and an interesting town center called the ‘Plateau’. However, what is definitely worth a visit is Santiago’s historically wealthy city of Cidade Velha. This UNESCO world heritage site was West Africa’s first-ever European establishment as well as the country’s oldest settlement. In the northern region of Santiago lies the beach town of Tarrafal. The beach is small in size, but its pristine waters and beautiful settings attracts a plethora of visitors, who come to swim or snorkel in its clear waters.
For a slight change in scenery, the island of Boa Vista is known for its sand dunes and desert landscapes. The island is famed for excellent windsurfing on its white-sand beaches and humpback whale and sea turtles sightings. The island’s main town Sal Rei houses an array of resorts and hotels. The remains of a 19th-century fort is another of the town’s prime attractions.
The Santo Antao island – located in the country’s northwest corner is the second-largest island in Cabo Verde. The verdant terrain of the island is perfect for hiking and trekking. The island’s rugged landscape offers some of the best views in West Africa. Just south of Santo Antao, the island of Sao Vicente is home to the country’s most beautiful city – Mindelo. The city hosts two of the most happening festivals in Cabo Verde – Baia das Gatas and Mindelo Carnival, and both are an absolute joy to attend. Apart from its cultural importance however, Mindelo’s colonial buildings and the stunning port are also ripe for exploration.
In southern Cabo Verde, Fogo island houses the country’s highest point – Pico de Fogo. Climbing the intact volcanic cone is the main reason why most people visit this island.
Cabo Verde is one of Africa’s most beautiful island destinations. With a warm tropical climate, volcanic islands with stunning beaches and verdant hiking territory, Cabo Verde can be a great choice for your next holiday trip.
