Historical importance? Check. Modern elements? Check. Great food and drinks? Check. Welcome to Belgium – a diverse country with beautiful medieval towns, great museums, North Sea beaches and home to famed Belgian chocolates.
Capital Brussels is located in the centre of the country. A culturally diverse city, it is dotted with art deco architecture alongside modern buildings. Grand Place (also known as Grote Markt) is, however, the city’s focal point. This UNESCO listed square is considered one of the most beautiful, all over Europe. Don’t forget to visit the 15th-century city hall while you’re here. Brussel’s other attractions include the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Musical Instruments Museum and the verdant Brussels Park.
Located northwest of the country, Bruges is known for its canals and well-preserved medieval architecture. Walking the city’s cobbled streets or going on a canal cruise are the best ways to explore its historical heritage. Midway between Brussels and Bruges lies Ghent – one of the oldest cities in the country. Nowadays, the city is known as a university town and has a vibrant cultural centre. Though Ghent has plenty of historical architecture, the UNESCO listed 91m tall, Het Belfort van Gent tower is the most renowned landmark. Belgium’s second-city and biggest port, Antwerp is also the world’s diamond hub, and is known for its top-notch fashion and entertainment. The city also boasts a few excellent museums and historic sites. Ypres – a town in the western region of Belgium with proximity to France – is where you can learn more about World War I history of Belgium. The city was thoroughly destroyed during WWI but was later carefully restored. Along with various WWI memorials, the spectacular (restored) medieval building called Lakenhalle, which was one of the largest commercial buidlings of its time, is its must-visit location.
Belgium’s French-speaking, and historically and culturally important Wallonia region, offers some great outdoor activities and cultural experiences. Be it the UNESCO listed Carnival of Binche, the impressive Castle of Bouillon or the striking riverside setting of Dinant, Wallonia is one of Belgium’s most beautiful and enticing regions.
