Zagorohoria

Zagorohoria is a cluster of 46 villages that are scattered over the Pindus mountains in the Epirus region of northwestern Greece, close to the Albanian border. The word Zagorohoria or Zagori is of Slavic origin which means ‘village beyond the mountains’ and it perfectly captures the essence of this unique location.

History

Archaeological evidence suggests that the villages were inhabited for over 10,000 years. The region has seen Molossian, Byzantine and Ottoman settlers over the ages. In the past century, parts of Zagori suffered Italian and German attacks. Nevertheless, the greater beauty and charm of Zagori remains intact till date.

Villages Of Zagori

Set among rolling landscapes of lush greenery, rugged mountains, beautiful rivers and waterfalls, these villages have secured a secluded spot for themselves where they remain untouched by modernity. Until recent times, the villages did not have a road network and were connected to each other by stone bridges and stairways. There are over 160 of these artistic arched bridges which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and are the most iconic elements of Zagori. Kokkori and Plakida bridges and the ones near the villages of Kipi and Konitsa are the most popular bridges.

The villages display traditional Epirotic architecture, which is prevalent in these mountains – limestone houses with slate roofs and wooden staircases. Some manors also have walled courtyards and gardens. The village layout generally consists of a square called ‘mesochori’, with a plane tree in the centre, a fountain and the main church which is surrounded by a network of cobbled streets. Some of the churches display beautiful frescoes and Byzantine architecture.

The region is dominated by the indigenous Sarakatsani people, who speak a unique North Greek dialect. They still keep up with ancient Greek customs and traditions, which are barely visible in other parts of the country today. If you are lucky, you might get a chance to observe their rituals and festivals.

Monodendri is one of the major villages which offers splendid views of the Vikos Gorge. The 16th century Moni Agia Paraskevi monastery is set overlooking the gorge and the view from here is simply amazing! From the village, a trail leads you to the popular Oxya viewpoint that allows you to look into the gorge’s depths.

Kipi is one of the most picturesque villages with multiple stone bridges that cross over the Voidomatis river. Papingo and Mikro Papingo are popular among visitors as they house multiple stays, restaurants and bars, surrounded by scenic mountains. Papingo is also famous for the hexagonal bell tower in the 19th century Agios Vlasios church.

Vikos Gorge

Vikos Gorge which comes under the Vikos-Aoos National Park is the main natural attraction of Zagori, set on the slopes of Mount Tymfi. The gorge is about 38 km long and was carved by the river Voidomatis over millions of years. It begins near the Monodendri village and goes on till Vikos village. The gorge has been labelled by Guinness as the world’s deepest gorge relative to its width and its deepest point drops to almost 1 km. The gorge still retains its virgin form due to which several rich ecosystems and endangered species of flora and fauna thrive.

Heaven for adventure seekers

The geography of the region is perfect for an exciting range of outdoor activities. Popular hiking trails pass through the Vikos Gorge, Dragon lake and Voidomatis river, where you can also go rafting. Horse-riding, fishing and rock climbing are other popular activities and come in various levels suitable for beginners upto pros. The stunning scenery, breathtaking viewpoints and rare species of deers and birds make the outdoor experience more interesting. The forests are also inhabited by wild boars, bears and foxes, so be mindful of them and adhere to the guidelines given.
