Paxi

Paxi is the smallest member of the Ionian islands. This tiny island is just 13 km long and is situated just south of Corfu, one of the most popular islands of the archipelago.

In spite of its tiny size, Paxi paints a pretty picture of lush green landscapes, beautiful sandy beaches and charming villages that resemble the Caribbean setting. This is one of the reasons why Paxi has been gaining a lot of attention. The only way to reach Paxi is through water from neighbouring Ionian islands like Corfu, Igoumenitsa from the Greek mainland and port cities of Italy like Brindisi and Bari.

History

According to Greek mythology, the island of Paxi was created by Poseidon, the God of Sea when he wanted a secluded spot to spend time with his wife, Amphitrite. When Poseidon struck his trident on the island of Corfu, a small part broke away to create Paxi.

Throughout the centuries, the Ottomans, Byzantines, Venetians, Spanish, Russians, British and French settled in Paxi and left their impressions behind. This rich influx of culture is mainly visible in the aesthetic architecture of the island.

Villages of Paxi

Paxi has three main villages – Gaios, Lakka and Loggos.

Gaios acts as the main port and capital of Paxi. From the harbour, there are frequent ferries to the nearby islets of Panagia, Antipaxos and Agios Nikolaos which have great beaches. Antipaxos especially, is worth highlighting for its crystal clear blue waters and sprawling vineyards. The village of Gaios is defined by its picturesque Venetian town squares, Spanish steps, houses and mansions reflecting Ionian and Neoclassical architecture. It also has the Museum of Paxi and the Church of Agios Apostoli.

The village of Lakka is set on a horseshoe-shaped bay and bounded by lush landscapes of olive and cypress trees. Its cobblestone alleys have a handful of bakeries, shops, Greek tavernas and Italian restaurants. There are also a few Venetian buildings and a Byzantine church from the 16th century. Located to the west of the bay, there are two pebble beaches – Harami and Kanoni, which are great for swimming. Towards the east lie the beaches of Monodendri, Arkoudaki and Orkos.

Loggos is another harbour village located south of Lakka and has the smallest port in Paxi. The waterfront tavernas and cafes serve splendid views of the sea along with your delicious meal.

Beaches

The beaches are either sandy or pebbled with waters in captivating shades of blue and are flanked by greenery. Pounda, Marami and Kipiadi are the best offbeat beaches while Plakes, Logos and Mogonisi have beachside tavernas and are closer to the villages. Some of the beaches are also favourable for water activities like swimming, windsurfing and scuba diving.

Erimitis Beach is the best place to watch a dramatic sunset, which is complemented by its setting below high cliffs, white shores and surreal blue waters. It is located on the western coast of the island. An interesting fact about this beach is that it was formed very recently, in 2007, resulting from a landslide.
