Myrtos Beach

Myrtos Beach is a popular location on every traveller’s map and is constantly ranked among the best beaches in Greece and the world itself. It is located on the northwestern part of the Ionian archipelago’s Kefalonia island, around 30 km from its capital Argostoli.

Why is Myrtos so popular?

The reason why this beach creates such a huge buzz is attributed to its exaggerated setting. Set between the feet of two towering mountains, Kalon Oros and Agios Dynati, it forms a horseshoe bay and has a beautiful white pebbled shore. The rugged limestone cliffs are topped with dense greenery and gradually slope down to sea level. The waters here are crystal clear in varying shades of blue, and perfect for underwater exploration. Put together, all these components form a truly splendid sight and you will agree that Myrtos is rightly ranked as one of the planet’s greatest. If you felt that the beach somehow seems familiar, you must have probably seen it on numerous Greek travel websites, brochures and of course, on Instagram.

There is a small bar on the beach but you will have to go to the nearby village, Divarata for proper dining options. So make sure you bring food and water along, especially if you are planning to stay for long.

Your visit to Myrtos is incomplete if you don’t watch the dramatic sunset from here. As you relax on the shore, you will be presented with an infinite view of the sea and the horizon. When dusk approaches, the sun slowly drops into the sea, setting the waters on fire with a million dazzling shades of yellow and orange. It is Remarkable. This sunset is something you will not forget for a very long time and will undoubtedly be the best part of your visit to Kefalonia Island.

Reaching Here

You can arrive directly at the beach by water from neighbouring islands and even some places from the mainland, including Athens. If you are already on Kefalonia island, you can get to the beach from the village of Divarata by public buses or taxis.

Kefalonia Island

While Myrtos beach is the signature landmark of the island, it hosts plenty of other attractions too. The beautiful Kefalonia is famous for its other scenic beaches, picturesque villages and a stunning natural landscape. The beaches of Petani, Xi, Skala and Lourdes, capital Argostoli with its vibrant nightlife, charming villages like Fiscardo and Assos, mysterious caves of Drogarati and Melissani are some of the highlights of the island.

Why should you visit?

The fact that this is one of the best beaches in the world, must have you packing your bags already. Adding to this, you can also discover Kefalonia island, for a perfect Greek island experience.
