The island of Lefkada belongs to the Ionian archipelago in the Ionian Sea. Lefkada is connected to the Greek mainland through a narrow causeway due to which it is criticised by some as a fake island. In spite of being easily accessible, Lefkada has very subtle traces of modernity. This pristine form of the island is why it is highly appreciated by visitors and remarked as one of the best islands in Greece.
The island is composed of virgin white sand beaches, crystalline blue waters, olive groves, timeless villages and rocky cliffs, creating a distinct Greek island experience.
Lefkada Town, the capital of the island, is a quaint little village with charming cobblestone alleys, tavernas, museums and classical churches. The Agia Mavra Castle stands as the entrance to the village and was first constructed by the Franks in the 14th century and later expanded by the Venetians in the 16th century. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has high walls which stand strong till date; however, inside the walls, you will only find crumbling structures.
Nydri or Nidri, is a picturesque seaside village which is famous for its beautiful waterfall, surrounded by white rocks. From Nydri, you can hop on a boat tour to visit beautiful neighbouring islets like Skorpios, Kalamos, Meganisi and Ithaca.
Apart from these, the island has mountainous villages like Karia, Vafkeri, Poros and Athani, scenic harbour villages like Sivota, Vlichos, Ligia and Vassiliki and the villages of Eglouvi and Tsoukalades accented by impressive traditional architecture.
If you are in Lefkada, then no doubt you are here to visit its famed beaches. No amount of photographs will do justice to the real beauty of Lefkada’s beaches. If you were mesmerised by the pictures alone, then prepare to be spellbound when you experience them in person. On the western coast of the island, the waters are light blue near the shore and then turn inky blue – the sight is bewitching and seems like a painting!
Porto Katsiki, located near Athani village, tops the long list of beaches in Lefkada. Its beautiful blue waters with a background of towering white cliffs are simply unmissable. Kathisma and Egremni are next in line, with their sandy shores and exotic indigo waters. Nidri beach is the most organised and is best for water sports. Vassiliki and Agios Ioannis host great beach resorts and their strong winds are apt for windsurfing. Mylos, Gialos and Kalamitsi are secluded pristine beaches and are popular among naturists.
Remember that these are just a few select beaches on the island and there are a dozen more that you can explore!
A long list of lovely villages and spectacular beaches make up this dream island. If you are obsessed with aesthetically pleasing sights, then look no more, Lefkada is your perfect vacation choice.
