Fiskardo

Fiskardo is a charming village located on the northernmost part of Kefalonia island, the largest of the Ionian islands.

Fiskardo is painted with rows of Venetian-style colourful houses which are bounded by rolling landscapes of olive and cypress trees. The village is mostly concentrated around its harbour where plenty of fishing boats and ferries are tethered. The waterfront is lined with tavernas, bars and cafes, making it the most lively spot in the village. From here, you can also spot the neighbouring island, Ithaca. Above the waterfront, you will find the Natural and Environmental Museum.

History

According to the 5th-century Greek historian Herodotus, prior to the village of Fiskardo, an ancient settlement named Panormos, existed here. In the 2000s, several artefacts and structures dating back to the Roman era (146 BC- 330 AD) were discovered in construction sites, which proved Herodotus’s statements.

Fiskardo was one of the few places on the island that escaped the Ionian earthquake in 1953 with minimal damage and was able to retain its original structures. This is why, unlike most of the island, Fiskardo gives off a traditional charm with its Venetian era architecture.

Beaches

Apart from its lively harbour, the other major highlights of Fiskardo are its numerous stunning beaches. The coastline of Fiskardo is dotted with pebbled beaches and coves, of which Emblisi is the most famous. With its pristine white pebbled shore and crystal clear waters in enchanting shades of blue, Emblisi creates a magical atmosphere. A short five-minute drive away from the village, you will reach the surreal setting of Foki beach with its indigo waters, surrounded by olive forests. Zavalata, Kimilia, Dafnoudi and Alaties are other popular beaches near the village.

The beaches also offer water activities like boating, snorkelling, kayaking and scuba diving. If you are not a fan of these activities, you can always relax and sunbathe.

Kefalonia Island

Apart from Fiskardo, the beautiful Kefalonia island is famous for its scenic beaches, picturesque villages and a stunning natural landscape. The beaches of Myrtos, Petani, Xi, Skala and Lourdes, capital Argostoli with its vibrant nightlife, charming villages like Assos, mysterious caves of Drogarati and Melissani are some of the many highlights of the island.

Why should you visit?

Fiskardo somehow manages to maintain a traditional village vibe and a cosmopolitan buzz, which is the main reason it draws in visitors. This picturesque village is also a popular spot for the affluent and celebrities and you will find fancy yachts docked in the harbour.

If you are up for a unique Greek experience, with plenty of scenic sights, Fiskardo is a great place to visit.
