Assos

Assos (also known as Asos) is a small picturesque village located in Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionians islands. The village is located around 36 km from the capital of Kefalonia, Argostolion.

Assos is set on the shores of a horseshoe-shaped bay because of which the layout of the village resembles an amphitheatre. The village boasts of elegant traditional architecture, lush greenery and a few pebbled beaches. By the harbour, you will find several tavernas and restaurants which serve classical Greek cuisine. A walk around the narrow alleys of the sleepy village will give you the ‘lost in time’ vibe, which is what makes Assos one of the best places on the island.

As Assos is quite isolated from the rest of the island, you will either require your own vehicle or rent one to reach here.

Castle of Assos

The landscape around Assos is dominated by the Castle of Assos and the fortifications, which makes them the highlight of Assos. The fortifications once enclosed a village which was later abandoned after the Ionian earthquake in 1953. There were four entrances, out of which two remain today. The Castle was constructed by the Venetians in the 16th century to protect the village from pirates and Turkish threat. Till the mid-20th century, it was also used to hold political prisoners who were made to cultivate vineyards.

Today, parts of the castle and its walls, especially an arched entrance bearing the Venetian Lion of Saint Mark, the church of St. Mark and the former house of the Venetian High Commissioner are well-preserved. Since the castle’s main function was to guard the bay, you can enjoy panoramic views of the sea and village from above.

Assos Beach

Assos Beach is located right in the centre of the village and has a pebbled shore where you will find a few sunbeds and tavernas. As the water here is quite shallow, it is perfect for swimming. There is another tiny beach which is located on the way to the castle.

Kefalonia Island

Apart from Assos, the beautiful Kefalonia island is famous for its scenic beaches, picturesque villages and a stunning natural landscape. The beaches of Myrtos, Petani, Xi, Skala and Lourdes, capital Argostoli with its vibrant nightlife, charming villages like Fiskardo, mysterious caves of Drogarati and Melissani are some of the highlights of the island.

Myrtos Beach

Assos is located north of Myrtos beach which is one of the top beaches in Greece given its dramatic setting, crystal clear waters and a white pebbled shore. It lies between two mountains, Kalon Oros and Agia Dynati. Make sure to visit the beach on your way to or from Assos as it is a great spot to watch the sunset.

Why should you visit?

If you wish to escape the typical tourist crowd and enjoy a peaceful vacation, Assos is an apt choice. Set amidst massive mountains and the sea, this charming little village with its beautiful beaches are perfect for romantics and anyone looking for a refreshing holiday.
