Folegandros

Folegandros is located in the southern part of the Cyclades archipelago along with the islands of Santorini, Los, Anafi and Sikonas. According to Greek mythology, Folegandros was named after a son of King Minos of Thebes. In spite of being a neighbour to the world-famous Santorini island, Folegandros is a picture of stark contrast. Its natural charm remains untouched and stands apart from the typical touristy islands. Folegandros does not offer impressive activities, attractions or sightseeing adventures for its visitors, but what it does offer is an abundance of nature.

With its soothing atmosphere, sounds of the sea and a slow pace of life, Folegandros packs all the elements that makes for a perfect leisure vacation. The island displays traditional Cycladic architecture with its whitewashed houses, blue doors and colourful windows. You can easily get around the island by foot or opt for buses.

This tiny island will provide you with panoramic views of the azure Aegean waters and mesmerising sunsets and sunrise. The church of Panagia is situated at one of the most elevated areas on the island and is a great spot for watching the sunset.

Towns of Folegandros

Folegandros has three main towns – Chora, Karavostasis and Ano Meria.

Karavostasis has the port of Folegandros and is the entry point to the island. From here, you will be greeted with the initial sights of the island – charming whitewashed houses, narrow streets and fishing boats. This port-village has a few boutique hotels, bakeries and dining options.

Chora, the island’s capital is dramatically located atop a cliff and the views from here are a feast for the eyes. The town squares have plenty of tavernas, cafes, bars and shops. Make sure you try out the island’s exceptional cuisine here. Kastro, constructed in the 13th century by the Venetians is a medieval village and castle that is a part of Chora and a walk here will give you an idea of how ancient Greece must have been. The narrow alleys lined with classical Greek houses are very charming. The locals are very warm, friendly and will make you feel like one among them. In the evenings, everyone comes out to socialise with drinks, food, music and plenty of conversations and laughter. This is when the island begins to light up and the sun is just setting into the Aegean – could there be a more perfect setting for dusk?

Ano Meria is an agricultural town and has a lush green landscape. You can take a tour of the farms to get a taste of Greek country life. It also houses the small Ecological and Folklore Museum which narrates the island’s history.

Beaches

The beaches of Folegandros are raw and natural with secluded coves, serene atmosphere and crystal clear waters. Agali, Agios Georgios, Ambeli, Karavostasi and Ligara are the five main beaches and some of them have umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, but mostly it is just you and nature! Katergo beach, near Karavostasis, is popular among naturists.

Why should you visit?

If you wish to take a break from routine life with a relaxed holiday, then Folegandros is the perfect fit. It provides a unique and laid-back experience that is unmissable. You can also combine Folegandros with a trip to other islands in the Cyclades like Santorini.
