Rethymno is an exotic blend of ancient history and contemporary luxury. It lies between the Chania and Heraklion regions of Crete and is one of the biggest cities on the island.
On exploring the city, you will notice how it has been shaped by all the different civilizations that flourished here. Its rich history began almost 4500 years back with the Minoan civilization and was followed by the Byzantines, Romans, Ottomans and Venetians.
Most of Rethymno’s Old Town was built by the Venetians during the 16th century and has stood the test of time. It is one of the best-preserved towns in Greece and its charming alleys, mansions, town squares and archways will tell you why. Makry Steno, which means ‘long alley’ is the most popular street and is lined with beautiful Venetian fountains and doorways.
The Venetian harbour and lighthouse, surrounded by waterfront cafes and restaurants form the perfect setting for dinner. A short walk away from here, you will find the Venetian Loggia or Town Hall with its impressive Palladian-style architecture. You will also come across the Guora Gate which was once the entrance to Rethymno. When the Ottomans took over, it was common for them to convert churches or cathedrals to mosques. This is why Old Town has a tinge of Turkish elements and the most important one is the Neratze Mosque which was once a part of a Christian monastery.
This imposing Venetian Castle stands guard over the town and is hard to miss given its central location. In the premises, you will be surprised to find churches as well a mosque, which was once the Cathedral of St Nicolas. Apart from this, there is the House of the Rector, the Council building, an armoury and several other houses and bastions. Needless to say, you will be guaranteed splendid views of the Mediterranean and the city from here.
The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno is located near the fort and on its display, you can see Rethymno’s long history spanning from the Minoan to Venetian times. There are artefacts like ceramics, sculptures, coins, jewellery and weapons.
On the eastern side of the town is Crete’s longest beach which stretches from Rethymno to Skatela. There are multiple water sports available here including great dining options overlooking the sea.
Rethymno has amazing options for stay. You can either experience a stay in a Venetian mansion turned into a boutique hotel in Old Town or opt for a luxurious exclusive resort by the beach. It is also a great place to savour Cretan cuisine and its unique fusion of flavours from multiple cultures.
With its picture-perfect setting by the Mediterranean and an ancient yet modern vibe, Rethymno is an exciting destination to explore.
