Sapa

Sapa is a beautiful mountain town located in northwestern Vietnam, near the border with China. It is located around 380 km away from capital Hanoi and is best reached through an overnight train to Lao Cai city, followed by a scenic bus journey to Sapa town.

Sapa and the surrounding valleys were developed during the French rule in the early 20th century and you are bound to come across traces of French architecture and culture during your trip. The distinct rice terraces that blanket the mountains are Sapa’s most recognised feature. Adding to this, lush greenery, rolling mountains, picturesque valleys and charming villages make Sapa one of the best tourist destinations in northern Vietnam.

Sapa Villages

A diverse cluster of small villages, inhabited by five distinct ethnic groups and a few other minorities, make up Sapa. The main town, also called Sapa, features the only museum in the region, where you can learn about the century-old history of Sapa and its French rule, including insights into its ethnic cultures. The town also houses a quaint little French church, commonly called the Stone Church, with impressive stained glass windows. Cat Cat village, located just 2 km away from the main town is a great place to interact with the H’mong people, the major ethnic group in Sapa who are well known for their weaving and sewing. Sin Chai village, located around 5 km from Sapa town boasts of an unspoilt natural charm and acres of lovely rice paddies and greenery to explore. Sin Chai is the best place for an authentic Vietnamese village experience, as it is devoid of any toursity elements and is purely natural. The scenic Lao Chai village, around 9 km from Sapa town has a stunning landscape defined by the Hoang Lien Son mountains and the Muong Hoa stream and is home to the H’mong tribe.

When you’re in Vietnam, it goes without saying that the local cuisine is a delight and must definitely be sampled. In Sapa, you will find plenty of barbeque stalls selling a wide range of meat and hot pot stalls selling a unique stew of meat and vegetables. You will also come across tasty pastries and baguettes, courtesy of the French.

Shopping

The villages are also great places to shop local handicrafts made by the H’mong, Dao and Yay people, who are particularly regarded for their skilled handwork. The daily Sapa Market in the main town is the easiest to access and best to visit on a Saturday. The Sunday Bac Ha Market located almost 3 hours away from Sapa town and the Tuesday Coc Ly Market, located almost 2 hours away are the most popular.

Muong Hoa Valley

The Muong Hoa Valley, located 10 km away from the main town, is one of Sapa’s most scenic locations. It is best experienced on a hike through its stretches of rice terraces, untouched native villages of Hao Thao, Lao Chai, Ta Van and Ban Hu and the 15 km long Hoa stream. The valley also has hundreds of rock petroglyphs scattered throughout the rice terraces, the meaning of which are still unknown. These rock carvings are believed to be over 3000 years old.

Hiking

Sapa is blessed with a stunning natural landscape and a chilly climate that are perfect for hiking and trekking. What better way to explore the beautiful rice terraces and the mighty Hoang Lien mountains than hours of traversing on foot, in close contact with nature! And not just that, the trails will also lead you through tribal villages where you can experience different cultural ethnicities. If you are up for a challenge, you can hike the Fan Si Pan, Vietnam’s highest peak that takes around a week to complete. However, you can also do shorter treks up the mountain and encounter its rich wildlife including langurs, gibbon, antelopes and various colourful bird species.

Another popular trail leads to the Thac Bac or Silver Waterfalls, which according to local legend was where the fairies came to bathe. The imposing waterfall towers upto 200 metres high and is surrounded by dense greenery, creating a scenic image that makes the long trek here totally worth it. Around 5 km away from the falls lies Vietnam’s highest pass, the Tram Ton Pass that offers amazing viewpoints.

Cable Car Ride

For those who are unable to experience the mighty Fan Si Pan by trekking or hiking, there are cable car rides that reach almost near the summit in just 15 minutes! The journey will present you with stunning views of the villages, valleys and rice terraces.

Why should you visit?

If you are looking to experience the layers of Vietnam’s diverse culture, feast on stunning natural landscapes, challenge yourself to exciting hikes and treks or simply enjoy a mountain retreat, then Sapa is the place to be.
