Huacachina

Huacachina is a lovely desert oasis nestled amidst rolling sand dunes and is located on the outskirts of Ica, a city in southern Peru. This picturesque town is just a collection of restaurants and resorts surrounding a blue lagoon. It was once a retreat for the Peruvian bourgeoisie and today welcomes tourists from all around the world.

While you are here, don’t forget to unwind and go crazy at a party near the oasis, drink smoothies the next morning to nurse your hangover, listen to the local legends on the town’s history and get your adrenaline pumping indulging in all the exciting activities it offers.

Activities

Unlike most places in Peru, there are no historical attractions here and what you will find is plenty of adventure activities. This is why the town has become a popular destination among backpackers in recent times.

  • Sandboarding: This is one of the main reasons why people visit the town – to take full advantage of the highs and lows of the dunes for a thrilling session of sandboarding. If you are a fan of snowboarding or skateboarding, you are bound to enjoy this even more. Though it might seem easy, it is highly possible that you stumble and roll all the way down instead!
  • Dune Buggy: This one is for adventure junkies – get on a dune buggy ride and enjoy your adrenaline rush as the driver rips through the dunes at a heart-racing pace. It is quite similar to a roller coaster without its tracks. This is a super fast and bumpy ride, definitely not for the faint-hearted.
  • Bodyboarding: Quite similar to sandboarding, except that you lie flat on your stomach with the board under you. Be ready to get sand all over you and yes, please try to keep your mouth closed and wear your sunglasses!
  • Hiking: Rolling down the dunes might seem fun while climbing up one is nothing short of hiking. It can be quite challenging to climb, but you will be rewarded with stunning views of the dunes and the town.
  • Sunset: If you’re planning to hike, then schedule it for the evening. You can sit atop a dune and enjoy the dazzling sunset that seems to set the entire desert on fire. This bright setting of red, orange and yellow hues also makes the evening a great time for an amazing photoshoot.
  • Swimming: You might be tempted to dive into the lagoon but it’s advised to stick to the pools in the hotels and hostels, as the lagoon is not clean enough. However, the locals believe that the waters have healing properties and you might see them go in for a swim and plaster themselves with mud.
  • Boating: You can also cruise the lagoon by hiring a paddleboat or a rowboat. After a day of adventurous activities, boating will help you relax and prepare yourself to party all night.
  • Wine Tour: Yes, you read that right. You can go on a wine tour in the middle of the desert. Book with a tour operator, visit a couple of wineries and learn how red wine and the brandy Pisco, Peru’s national alcoholic drink are made.
Why should you visit?

If you’ve had your fill of the archaeological treasures, mysterious ancient sites, Spanish cities and natural wealth that Peru has to offer, then heading to Huacachina to unwind and experience this unique setting is a great option.

Once you are done here, you can next visit other popular destinations like the Nazca lines, Isla Ballestas and Paracas National Reserve, which are just a few hours away from Huacachino.
