Canon del Colca

Cañón del Colca (Colca Canyon) is one of the world’s deepest river canyons with depths measuring 3,270 metres. It is located in southern Peru, around 160 km away from Arequipa and is among the country’s most visited tourist destinations.

The canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder, blessing the visitors with captivating sceneries at every turn. It is best known as the home to the Andean Condor, the world’s largest flying bird, which belongs to the vulture family. Chivay, Yanque and Cabanaconde are important towns that you will come across. While you are here, you can engage in exciting adventure activities like rafting and hiking or visit lovely colourful villages and terraced farmlands.

  • Viewpoints: The main highlight to look out for in the Colca Canyon is spotting the magnificent condors, and early mornings are the best times for that. The Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint will offer you the best opportunities to watch the condors and standing at a height of 3320 meters, it also offers stunning views of the canyon. Another popular viewpoint is the Mirador de San Miguel near Cabanaconde, that offers lovely views of a desert oasis.
  • Hiking: Any visit to the Colca Canyon will demand a lot of hiking; you’ll have to hike your way in, through and out. So make sure you are physically fit and well prepared to take on this challenge.
  • Thermal baths: What better way to relax yourself after long hours of hiking that soaking in hot springs! The La Calera hot springs near Chivay and the Baños Chacapi thermal baths near Yanque are popular options.
  • Villages: The valley is mainly home to three ethnic groups – the Kollowas, the Cabanas, and the Ccacca Tapay. Most of the villages here still follow their traditional lifestyle and it will be interesting to visit the people and learn about their culture.
  • And for the adrenaline junkies, mountain biking down the depths of the canyon, white-water rafting on the Colca river and horseback riding are great activities to indulge in.
