Ayacucho

Ayacucho (previously, Huamanga)  is a lovely highland city located in southern Peru, studded with aesthetic churches, interesting archaeological sites and Spanish era landmarks. However, this charming city hides a dark past as it was once the stronghold of the notorious terrorist group, the Shining Path. The group has been dissolved by the authorities and over the past decade, Ayacucho has become a popular tourist destination in Peru.

Ayacucho hosts the best Semana Santa celebrations in the country and it is held annually, a week before Easter. You can plan accordingly, if you are interested in being a part of this.

Plaza de Armas

Ayacucho’s Plaza de Armas is considered among the most beautiful plazas in the country. It is surrounded by the cathedral and restored Spanish era mansions. You will find plenty of benches or cafes to sit and admire the lovely architecture and beautifully manicured gardens.

Churches

With more than 30 stunningly beautiful churches, Ayacucho is rightfully called the City of Churches in Peru. Topping the list is the 17th century baroque cathedral Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows). It is located in the Plaza de Armas and features a baroque-churrigueresque style architecture with a gold leaf altar and intricately carved interior. Iglesia de San Francisco de Asis is a stone church that is admired for its retablos (religious ornaments) and art work.

Museums

Ayacucho is known for its art and the Museo de Arte Popular is the best place to witness it. Fascinating pieces of silverwork, tapestry, rugs, woodcarvings, ceramics and the popular retablos are on display. On most of the works, you will find depictions of native Ayacucho culture or religious motifs.

Museo de la Memoria narrates the dark history of the city when the Shining Path was at large. You will find accounts of eyewitnesses and photographs that display the horrors of that time. Santa Ana

Ayacucho is well known for its handicrafts and the best place to get your hands on them is the Santa Ana neighborhood. The streets are lined with artisan workshops and souvenir shops that make and sell items like rugs, carpets, trinkets, silver work and the famous retablos. There is also a mirador (lookout) from where you can see panoramic views of the city.

Wari Ruins

Wari was the ancient capital and the only remains of the Pre-Columbian Middle Horizon civilization (500 to 900 CE). Today, it is an excavated archaeological site where you will find the extensive ruins of religious, residential and official buildings that were made of mortar clay and slate. There is also a small museum that displays ceramics, sculptures and skeletons that were unearthed from the site.

Why should you visit?

With an interesting historical and cultural wealth, Ayacucho is a charming city that simply cannot be skipped. From its beautifully designed churches to ancient ruins, the city offers a good variety of experiences for every traveller.
