Bonaire

Would you be surprised if you found out that there’s a desert landscape floating on the Caribbean Sea? Well, that’s Bonaire for you!

Often considered a paradise for divers and snorkellers, this little country offers you a whole new world to explore underwater.

Diving and snorkelling are probably the main reasons why people visit Bonaire, and if you are visiting for the same, then you will surely love it there. Numerous service providers will cater to all your needs, whether you’re a pro or a novice. If you’re in Bonaire and are shy of the waters, do not worry. The delightful experience of mountain biking and hiking in Washington Slagbaai National Park will take care of you. There is a great opportunity to experience world-class windsurfing on the blue waters or kayaking among the mangroves of Lac Bay.

  1. A small island with a desert landscape
  2. it is for divers and snorkelers who want to immerse themselves in that vibrant world under the sea
  3. The beauty of Bonaire is that the coral reef, designated a national park, is just a few feet from the shoreline.
  4. Dozens of exceptional dive sites are easily accessible from the shore and teeming with life, making this island an independent diver’s (and snorkeler’s) paradise.
  5. Above the surface there’s world-class windsurfing on Lac Bay and excellent kayaking among the mangroves
  6. Biking trails wind through the arid hills, while driving routes show off the island’s historical and natural sights.
  7. Classy but low-key resorts and a few enticing restaurants complete the picture – perfect for travelers who prefer their adventure with some amenities.
  8. Bonaire is part of the Netherlands
  9. It is a mostly flat, riverless coral island renowned for diving, windsurfing, and bird watching (particularly flamingos)
  10. Lacking many sandy beaches – it instead has lush coral reefs – it is less visited by cruise ships
  11. Bonaire has world-class shore diving, much of it easy, and is thus well-suited for beginners, or for experienced divers who want relaxing independent diving.
  12. The official languages are Dutch and Papiamento, employees at hotels, dive shops and restaurants will almost always also speak English.
  13. Kralendijk – capital
    • a small island capital with a long, strollable seafront and a smattering of colorful colonial architecture.
    • It lacks historic sites and beautiful beaches, but it’s a pleasant place to stop, shop, lunch, dine or drink – and there are a few prime spots for catching the sunset.
    • Right around the cruise-ship terminal, the compact ‘downtown’ area is lined with shops, restaurants and shady plazas, all of which lend it some tropical charm
  14. Bonaire National Marine Park –
    • Bonaire National Marine Park is the island’s star attraction, a unique and precious resource that allows divers and snorkelers to explore miles of pristine coral reef.
    • The protected area covers the entire coast of the island, including Klein Bonaire, to a depth of 200ft (60m).
    • Between the two islands there are now more than 100 named dive sites, many of which are accessible from the shore.
  15. Lac Bay –
    • On the island’s southeastern side, Lac is a large inland bay that provides a critical habitat for green turtles and queen conchs – and windsurfers.
    • Indeed, this is one of the world’s premier destinations for riding the gusts, thanks to steady trade winds and warm, shallow waters.
    • The northern side of Lac Bay is sheltered by mangrove forests, where wetland birds breed and reef creatures mature
    • It’s a gem for paddlers and snorkelers, who can spot young fish, sea stars and sponges in the crystal-clear waters.
  16. Washington-Slagbaai National Park –
    • Comprising almost 20% of the island’s area, this vast desert landscape is a fantastic place to explore on foot, by bike or by car (preferably 4WD).
    • two driving routes and two hiking trails show off the park’s diversity, including salt ponds, seascapes, remote beaches, mangroves, volcanic hills and amazing desert vistas
    • lots of cacti.
  17. South End –
    • The southern end of Bonaire is flat and arid, with vistas that extend for many miles in all directions
    • The horizon is broken only by the massive mounds of sparkling-white salt
    • further south you’ll see acres and acres of salt pans, where ocean water sits and eventually evaporates, leaving the salty residue.
    • The landscape is oddly – startlingly – beautiful, especially as the water evaporates and with increasing salinity the pans turn 50 shades of pink.
    • look out for flamingos flocking in the pans.
    •  the coast is punctuated by rocky beaches, colonial-era landmarks, and lovely, windsurfer-dotted Lac Bay, making the perimeter a fascinating driving or cycling route.
  18. Klein Bonaire –
    • About 1km off the coast of Kralendijk, this little deserted island is where you’ll find the region’s most attractive beach: No Name Beach.
    • There are no facilities, aside from the marked dive sites and a couple of shade structures.
    • this is a popular spot for cruisers and other beach bums
  19. Rincon –
    • Bonaire’s second town, Rincon, is rather sleepy and very old – even older than Kralendijk
    • Nowadays, most of the residents are descended from slaves,
    • the village maintains an authentic island atmosphere, celebrating true Bonairean culture with classic Caribbean architecture, lively cultural markets, tantalizing local cuisine and a rousing harvest festival.
  20. Echo Parrot Sanctuary –
    • Bonaire’s most beloved bird is the yellow-throated Amazon parrot,
    • Learn about Echo’s efforts to preserve the parrot’s habitat, rehabilitate injured birds
    • Located 2km west of Rincon.
