Parc National Andasibe Mantadia

The Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is located in eastern Madagascar, just 150 km away from the country’s capital Antananarivo. This UNESCO listed park comprises two components, the Mantadia National Park and the Analamazoatra Reserve. It spreads over 155 sq km of dense rainforests which are home to rich biodiversity, most notably the indri which is the largest of the lemur species.

Getting Here

The park can be easily accessed by car from Antananarivo through the RN2 roadway. You can also get into a Taxi-brousse that is heading to Tamatave and get off at the Andasibe village junction. The village is just 2 km away from here. You can either find accommodation in the village or sleep in one of the campsites just outside Mantadia park. However, note that you might have to bring your own camping gear and you can’t count on their availability in the park.

Wildlife

The most popular residents of the park are Madagascar’s iconic animal – the lemur. You will find 11 different species of lemurs here, including the indri which is the largest lemur. So don’t be surprised when you find a 70 cm tall primate swinging in front of you! There are more than 15 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles and 80 species of amphibians, which include chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos, boas and tenrecs. The park also houses more than 100 species of birds, including endemic species like the Madagascar serpent-eagle, Madagascar yellow brow and Madagascar wagtail. Spotting these colourful birds amidst a lush green backdrop is truly a delight for the eyes!

Your exploration of the park will be accompanied by magical sounds of the wild and most distinctly, the calls of the indris which can be heard even 2 km away!

Activities

The park has a good number of circuits and trails to choose from, that vary in distance, time and level of fitness required. In short, there are trails to suit every person! You are bound to come across exciting wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled and cameras ready!

The Analamazaotra region is most visited as it is the best place to encounter the famous indris. The well-defined trails here include the Circuit indri 1 and Circuit indri 2 which focus on indri families, Circuit Aventure which passes through the Red and Green lakes, and the kid-friendly Palmier Circuit.

The Mantadia Park is relatively untouched in comparison with its neighbour, and those wishing for a more authentic wilderness experience can head here. In this region, you will come across beautiful waterfalls, natural pools, dense vegetation and of course, exotic flora and fauna. The Circuit Rianasoa (1km), Sacred Waterfall trail (2km) and Trekking Circuit (15 km) are the most popular routes.

Why should you visit?

Parc National Andasibe Mantadia offers a glimpse into the rich wilderness and wildlife of Madagascar. Though the park is small in comparison with others, the biodiversity it houses is simply amazing. It is a one-stop solution for all nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts as the park caters perfectly to all their needs.
