Nosy Be

Nosy Be, which means ‘Big Island’ in the Maglasay language, is Madagascar’s chief island destination. It boasts of a paradise-like setting of soft white sand shores, perfectly clear turquoise waters with a rich underwater life and luxurious resorts, restaurants and nightclubs, as expected of every island getaway. It is located off Madagascar’s northwest coast in the Mozambique Channel, Indian Ocean.

The island’s Fascene airport can be easily accessed by air from most African and few European countries. Another option is to take a ferry to Andoany, from Ankify on the mainland.

Andoany

Also known as Hell-Ville, Andonay is the capital of the island with a charming French vibe. Here, you can marvel at elegant French buildings and go shopping at the bustling Boulevard Général Charles de Gaulle street. The town also boasts of a lively nightlife which you can experience in its numerous karaoke bars and nightclubs.

In the Mahatsinjo village near the town, is the Sacred Banyan Tree which was planted by the Queen of the Sakalava tribe in the 19th-century. It is an important historic and religious landmark on the island and the Queen of Nosy Be herself comes here on an annual pilgrimage.

Lokobe National Park

Lokobe National Park is located in the southeast part of the island and encompasses lowland rainforests. You can either access the park from Ambanoro village which is around 7 km from Hell-Ville or from Ambatozavavy, around 11 km from Hell-Ville. Numerous hiking trails will lead you through the wilderness where you will meet the endangered black lemur and exotic species like panther chameleon. There are over 50 species of reptiles, 35 species of amphibians and 40 species of birds. Note that, only a small part of the park has well-laid trails and is accessible to visitors.

Lemuria Land

Lemuria Land, a private zoo and botanical garden, is a great wildlife-watching place located among beautiful ylang-ylang plantations. There is a distillery on site where you can watch how essential oils are made from the ylang-ylang flowers. The private zoo, in the middle of the plantation, is home to eight species of lemurs, chameleons, snakes, crocodiles, frogs, turtles and tropical birds. Apart from ylang-ylang, the botanical garden also grows various varieties of endemic and medicinal plants.

Mont Passot

Mont Passot, an extinct volcano, is a popular viewpoint on the island offering stunning panoramic views of neighbouring islands and the sea. It is more than 300 metres high and is a great spot to watch the sunset. You can hike up to the top and on your way, you will pass through crater lakes, lush vegetation and waterfalls. Note that it is mandatory to come along with a local guide.

Andilana

Andilana enjoys the title of the island’s best beach and is situated on its northwestern end. Its warm azure waters are perfect for a swim while its white sands will welcome you to relax and enjoy the sunset. You will also find the huge Andilana beach resort here.

Snorkelling and Diving

Nosy Be and its surrounding islands like the uninhabited Nosy Tanikely, offer great spots for diving and snorkelling. The waters are home to rich corals and exotic marine life including various species of rays, sharks, turtles and tropical fish. Between the months of July and November, it is also possible to see the mighty humpback whales.

Nosy Iranja

An hour-long boat ride will take you to the beautiful Nosy Iranja, which is made of two islands – the larger Nosy Iranja Be and smaller Nosy Iranja Kely. A narrow strip of land connects these two islands, which can be crossed on foot when the tide is low. The islands bear a pristine landscape of white sand beaches, coconut groves and lush tropical vegetation. It is also popular for diving and snorkelling.

Why should you visit?

In spite of being a major tourist destination in the country, Nosy Be still retains a laid-back vibe that adds to its charm. If you are a beach bum, then it will take no time for you to fall in love with the idyllic beaches of Nosy Be. Moreover, the island’s unique landscape of volcanic terrain and lush vegetation are sure to enthrall every visitor.
